Dalbavancin is a new lipoglycopeptide antibiotic in phase 3 trials for the treatment of resistant gram-positive pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). This agent exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to the terminal D-alanyl-D-alanine moiety of peptidoglycan precursors, thus blocking enzymes involved in the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis and cell wall formation.
